These connections make memories and remember the guests are always the most beautiful thing at your party so don’t stress.

“How To Tips” on implementing our rule:

Make your guests feel special: Start with the hand written invitation and end with a keepsake from the evening. These types of gestures let your guests know you think they are special.

Use Good Sense:

Taste: Great Food – Keep it simple and use fresh ingredients whenever possible. Never try out a recipe at your party. It is better to stick with tried and true than burn or ruin a trendy dish. Make as much as you can ahead of time.

Sight: Presentation is important. A beautiful signature cocktail for your party when guests walk in, not only relaxes your guests but gives them a visual signal of things to come. Lighting is key. A general rule is that candlelight is always best for night, but most times does not cast enough light for dinning. Invest in a dimmer (this is my husband’s rule) for your dining room, it will help to create the perfect mood while keeping the candlelight ambience.

Smell: Let the smell of the food come through, smell memory is powerful and can bring us back to a place or time in an instant – like how the smell of cotton candy can bring us back to memories of being a child at a summer fair. Make sure to buy unscented candles so you don’t overpower the smell of your food at your table.

Hearing: Music. Always take time to think this through before you host a party. Make your own mix or buy a couple of CDs. Music has incredible power to relax, excite, inspire and transport people to another place mentally.

Touch: Touch your guests’ hearts. Make time for conversation, be a guest at your own party and relish time spent together.

Dress Code

One of the advantages of being a guest entertainer is that we have passenger status
while on the ship, allowing us in to public areas where other crew members are not
allowed. We get to mix and mingle with passengers and over the years you will keep
meeting the repeat passengers and you can develop some very nice relationships.
On ships they usually have dress codes such as semi-formal and formal nights. You
are still employed by the cruise line, and like being employed in any job you are an
ambassador for the company, therefore you are expected to adhere to the dress
code for the evening and also dress in a smart and appropriate manner during
daytime hours.
Formal nights most men will wear tuxedos and the ladies are dressed in evening
gowns, on other nights I always wear a dress shirt and smart pants.

Gratuities

You are expected to pay gratuities to your cabin steward at passenger rates at the
end of the cruise. On some ships where we are in staff areas then the gratuities are
sleightly less because they only come in once a day and you won’t get the full
service as if you would if you were in a passenger area.
If you eat in the dining room then you must tip your waiter and busboy. As a rule if I
chose to eat in the dining room I always tip after my meal, but that isn’t very often
as I usually eat in the Buffet or Bistro.
On the ships now they often have an automatic charge of $10 per person per day
gratuity added to your bill, however you do not have to pay this unless you chose to.
This is what the passengers pay and it covers all gratuities including the dining
room. As I said, I never eat in the dining room and so only my cabin steward gets a
gratuity. If we chose to eat in another restaurant on the ship, rather than the buffet,
then of course we leave a tip. They usually recommend $3.50 per day for the cabin
steward in passenger areas.

Dining

You are allowed to dine in the passenger dining room and a buffets. Priority to
passengers must always be observed.

Usually the maitre d’ will have a special table put aside for guest entertainers,
although on many ships they have placed us with passengers. There are usually two
main sittings, one at 6pm and the other at 8.15pm. On the modern ships now they
promote open dining so you no longer have to have a seating assignment. Also with
the larger ships there is much more choice of dining from 24 hour Lido, Pizzeria,
Italian Restaurants, Chinese Restaurants and a Steak House. Of course each ship
differs with various restaurants. On the larger ships there will be a cover charge in
some restaurants such as the steak house charges $15.00 for the meal, the Italian
restaurant charges $25.00 per meal. All crew and passengers pay the same amount
to go to these specialality restaurants.

On vessels with alternate dining facilities, a cover charge will be made to all staff,
guest entertainers, and officers which are usually no more than $2.00. When you
join ask if there is such a list with the various charges, or ask another guest
entertainer who can tell you.

Dining in the officers’ mess is by invitation only.

Gambling

Ships are now like traveling resorts with all types of activities, one of the most
popular is the casino. You will need to check out what the rules are pertaining to
gambling on the ship you are to be working, but I know that the rules for the
company I work for state that guest entertainers and their guests and NOT
permitted to gamble onboard. This includes the casino, bingo, horse racing, and any
other gambling activities.
Note: Update, as of re-reading this article Guest Entertainers are NOW allowed to
gamble in the casino for the cruise line I work for.

Laundry and Dry Cleaning

Again, this varies from company to company, something you will need to check.
Ships are equipped with passenger laundrys where you can do your own washing.
However be warned … they can be dangerous. Many comedians joke about going to
the laundry room and seeing fights and arguments as passengers try to get hold of
a washing machine or dryer. Depending on the ship you might be allowed to use the
officers or crew laundry room which will not be so bad, but always check to make
sure it is okay. If you wish you send your laundry out for cleaning, then Guest
Entertainers are charge at the crew rate for their laundry and dry cleaning, again
check the regulations for the cruise line you are to be working for.

Medical

In most cases the company does not provide medical coverage and I strongly
recommend for you to arrange your own medical and health insurance plan. In my
contract it states that in the event of illness or injury during the term of the
contract, guest entertainers agree to look exclusively to their medical and health
insurers for payment of medical benefits and not to, in any way, hold the company
liable for such payments.
Visits to the ships doctor can be very expensive which is why medical insurance is
important, especially when traveling overseas.
If on the crew list then more often that not a visit to the doctor will not cost
anything, and if they want you to get an injection such as Yellow Fever of the Flu
Injection then they will not charge. It all depends on the doctor and ships policy.

This information specifically relates to hiring a close-up magician to entertain the adult guests at your wedding. Some magicians specialise in entertaining children, and this can be a great way to keep children occupied throughout the speeches. However, these performers tend to be a lot more readily available, and a bit of asking around will help you source a good quality local childrens entertainer at a reasonable price. Similarly, some magicians specialise in stage presentations, but this sort of presentation is very rarely appropriate for a wedding, and the more ambient style of close-up magic is more generally suitable.

Booking a magician who specialises in entertaining adults is a very different proposition – there aren’t very many about who do it well, and it can be difficult to know where to start. The first thing to consider should be what you want to achieve by having a magician entertain at your wedding, and determine where this can best fit into your order of events.

When To Use A Wedding Magician

Close-up magicians are usually used to provide entertainment at two different points in the wedding day. The first is after the ceremony when the magician can mingling with guests while wedding photographs are being taken. The drinks reception is also usually held at this point, and having the magician perform at this stage acts as an excellent ice-breaker. This can then continue with the magician performing at the tables between the courses of the wedding breakfast up until the start of the speeches.

The other popular time slot is to have the magician perform during the evening. This means that day guests are entertained after the meal and speeches, and any evening guests are welcomed with a little entertainment to get them in the mood. One thing to bear in mind when using a magician at this stage is how the magic will fit with any music you may have planned. Usually most venues have a separate area away from the dance floor, such as a bar area, and the magician can be placed here to entertain any guests who aren’t interested in the dancing, and those who are just taking a break. Or, if there is no separate area, you can have the magician start following the wedding breakfast and perform up until the evening music starts. This helps the day guests to break with the formality of the days events and any evening guests are welcomed with a little entertainment to get them in the mood.

Of course there is a lot of flexibility here and a magician experienced in wedding entertainment will be able to work in with your plans for the day.

Things To Consider When Using Magicians At A Wedding:

Speeches and music are two key traditional aspects of a wedding which should be considered when using wedding magicians.

Speeches: No matter how carefully you brief the best man and the father of the bride to keep it brief, often as not speeches will overrun! Many people find it best to make the speeches a natural start or end point for the magic to avoid paying for the magician’s waiting time.

Music: You will need to consider how your magician will fit in with any music you have planned. Magicians rely on people being able to follow what is being said. Three things can help: having the music at a lower level, having a separate “quiet zone” for the magician to work in, or a large room where one end will be quieter. But if the DJ or Band is expected to be louder, you will get better value for money by changing the timing to avoid a clash.

Where To Find A Magician:

Avoid using a local Yellow Pages or a similar directory to find a magician for your party. Magicians who perform for adult audiences are a rare breed, and while you may get lucky and find that you have a very good magician in your area, the chances are that you will wind up interviewing magicians who are part time and have very little actual performing experience, or magicians who specialise in performing for children and have very little experience in entertaining adult audiences.

Instead, use a web search, or look to find a national directory of entertainers, and cast your net over a good sized geographic base – experienced performers are more than happy to travel to a booking.

Choosing The Right Magician For Your Wedding:

Once you’ve drawn up a shortlist, here’s what to look at before you finalise your choice.

References, References, References!

Cast a careful eye over any quotes from previous clients. Are they from recognised and reputable UK companies and identifiable individuals, or could they just have been gathered from friends and family?
The ability to astonish should come as standard, but you also need to make sure the references show that the magician you book also has the personality to interact with your guests. Look for someone who is more than just astonishing – hire a magician who is entertaining and, moreover, enjoyable to be around.

Experience

Plenty of positive references show that you’re looking at a magician with broad experience. It can be a good idea to hire a magician who has worked UK-wide and, ideally, internationally because this usually shows a depth of experience.
You may also want to consider whether the magician is a full time performer. While there are a number of very good part-timers in the UK who shouldn’t be overlooked, the fact that a magician is a full-time performer will generally act as a good indicator of experience and ability. You can’t always glean this from a website so it’s a good idea to ask.
